It’s tempting to jump into the pool immediately but you should hold off from doing so until you have done these 3 things:
Shower thoroughly with soap
While most swimming pools remind users to shower before jumping in, some may still don’t find the need to. A proper shower before is important to remove impurities such as sweat, oil, cosmetics, urine and fecal matter from the body. This helps reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses like diarrhea, swimmer’s ear and skin infections. Let’s do our part in keeping the pool healthy for all!
Don’t swim immediately after a meal
If you had just snacked, allow half an hour to pass before swimming and longer if you had a heavy meal. Swimming has the tendency to cause acid reflux, even more than other sports, and is therefore better done after the food has been digested. Make your before- swim meal one with low-GI carbohydrate for a slower release of energy.
Protect your hair
The chemical and sun exposure from swimming can leave you with dried and damaged hair. Make sure to wet your hair with water before swimming to minimise the absorption of chemicals in the pool and use pre-swim hair products if you can. A swim cap too is a good way to protect your hair from the sun and chemicals.
