7 Tips You Need To Know To Pull Off Dark Lipstick

Dark lipstick looks have a kind of avant-garde and high fashion vibe to them. This is probably why some people find it intimidating. You may think that it only suits a certain lip shape, or if your skin is of a particular tone. That’s not true – anyone can rock the dark lipstick look!

Here are some tips and tricks to help you rock it:

1. Exfoliate and moisturise your lips before applying dark lipstick

Dark lipsticks are drier than the lighter-coloured ones. If your lips are dry, the dark colour will make it worse. Not just that, the dry patches can be obviously seen in dark-coloured lipsticks. To prevent that from happening, it’s best to exfoliate with lip scrub and apply a coat of lip balm before the lipstick.

2. Go easy on the eyes

You’ll want your lips to do most of the talking, not other parts of your features. So go easy on the makeup for your eyes and cheeks. Don’t let them outshine your dark, gorgeous lips.

3. Complement it

The rest of your makeup should complement your lips’ dark shade. If the lipstick used is dark brown, then use a bit of lighter brown on your eyes or cheeks. This ensures that your makeup looks well-balanced.

4. Always blot after the first layer

Blotting is not a waste of time or precious lipstick. After applying the first layer of dark lipstick, take a piece of tissue and press it against your lips gently. This will help you ‘press’ and ‘seal’ the colour onto your lips, making it last for a longer period of time. After blotting, apply a fresh layer of lipstick to your lips.

5. Use a lip liner

Not only do lip liners help set the shape of your lips, it also stops you from looking bad halfway through the night. Lip liners stop your lipstick from bleeding or feathering off the edges of your lips. Lip liners generally last longer, and can help prevent that if you line the edges.

6. Start from the centre

For a more natural look with dark lipsticks, start applying it from the centre of your lips. You can slowly blend the colour to the rest of your lips so that it’s lighter on the side. This will make your lips look more defined.

7. Try the sheer version if you’re still not sure

If you’re still not sure if dark lipsticks are your thing, try the sheer ones first. It looks great on everyone, and a good induction for those who may be a little shy with bold makeup.
