Post-Party Cleaning: Helpful Checklist

Hosting a party is a fantastic way to spend quality time with friends and family in a joyful and fun environment. However, the downside to organizing a party is that it requires a lot of cleanup after the event.

A pile of dirty dishes, crumbs on the floor and trash leftovers are enough to make your house look like a complete mess. When the festivities are over, dealing with post-party cleaning and getting the house back to its previous condition can often feel overwhelming.

But if you go about it methodically, cleaning up after a party doesn’t have to be a daunting task. To make things easier for you, we’ve prepared a list of things to keep in mind as you go through the post-party cleaning process.

What to do before the party

There are a few simple things you can do before your party is set up that will help you clean up faster after the party.

1. Buy cleaning supplies

Cleaning supplies and tools are essential components of any party, so make sure to include them in your shopping list among the food and drinks. When it’s time to clean up after a huge party, here are some of the things you may need:

  • Floor mops, brooms & sweepers
  • Kitchen Trash Bags & Garbage Bags
  • Extra rolls of paper towels & microfiber cloths
  • Carpet/upholstery cleaners, magic erasers & multi-purpose cleaner

2. Make trash cans visible to everyone

Place a few trash cans and recycling bins around the house where your guests can quickly find and use them.

3. Mark out an area for food and drinks

Make sure you have coasters and a designated area for food and drinks. Put rolls of paper towels in the rooms where people will be gathering. Keep microfiber cloths or paper towels on hand to clean up any spills as soon as they happen.

4. Empty the dishwasher and clean the kitchen counters

After the party is over, you’ll need space in your dishwasher and kitchen to store the dishes and glasses. Make sure your kitchen counters are clean and your dishwasher is empty.

After Party Clean up

1. Pick up the garbage

Use a large trash bag to clean out every room that was used as a gathering space for the party. Remove any leftover food from the plates to keep ants and other insects at bay. Empty bottles should be placed in a separate bag for recycling. As soon as you finish, make sure to tie the bags together and put them outside.

2. Clean up the dishes

Collect all plates, glasses, mugs, bowls, serving dishes, and utensils on a tray or dishpan and bring them to the kitchen for cleaning. Load the dishwasher with dirty dishes and run it. If necessary, soak dirty pans and dishes in the sink.

3. Check for stains or spills on furniture / rugs / carpets

Examine your carpets, rugs, and furniture for stains, and wipe up any spills. If you notice any stains, you can soak and treat them with cleaning supplies such as a multi-purpose cleaner. Cleaning up right after a party is the best approach to ensure that no stains remain on the surface. The longer you leave stains on your carpets and rugs, the more difficult they will be to remove.

4. Load your washer

Wash all of your bathroom and kitchen towels, table linens, and other stuff in one load of laundry. This will help keep them clean, as they may have moderate dirt and stains left after the party. Put the clothing in the dryer as soon as you’re finished.

5. Clean up the kitchen areas

Use a moist cloth to wipe out the sink and counters in the kitchen and the stove. To clean glass and stainless steel, you can mix warm water and vinegar to eliminate grease from these surfaces.

6. Clean up the bathroom area

Clean the common surfaces in your bathroom, such as the toilet seat, the toilet handles, and the faucets, using a disinfectant. When cleaning the toilet, apply the toilet bowl cleaner and let it sit for a while. Clean the floor in your bathroom with a mop.

7. Wipe down common surfaces

Wipe down common surfaces such as coffee tables, countertops, knobs, and handles. You can use a wet microfiber cloth to clean up most surfaces.

8. Wash / Clean the floor

The floors, too, may need some work. Vacuum, sweep or mop your floor to remove debris and complete your post-party clean-up.
