How To Get Rid Of Pests and Cockroaches

With such wonderful weather in Malaysia – plenty of sunshine and rain, it’s the perfect breeding ground for many tropical pests. Most are harmless and pose no immediate danger, but a few cause havoc at homes and offices.

The most common pest problem in Malaysia are cockroaches and rats. The mere sight of these types of pest can send shivers down your spine. Not only are they a nuisance, they are harmful as they act as carriers of different diseases and they can contaminate our food.

Here are a few tips to getting rid of this common pest.

  1. Denying Them Water
Cockroaches can go without food for more than a month but only a week tops without water. Find all the water leaks in your house, and fix them. (Get a plumber by clicking here)

2. Ensure Cleanliness
A clean house is key to keep cockroaches, (or worse, rats!) away, starting from the kitchen. Clear the dishes, keep left-over food away and take out trash regularly.  Keep all containers sealed and don’t leave them out in the open.

3. Bait
A few proven methods are adhesive-based traps and poisonous roach baits. The latter is more effective as the roaches will eat the poison and emit it back at the nest, exposing the poison to other cockroaches, eventually killing them.  Once the first generation of cockroaches is killed, you’ll need to poison the cockroaches who haven’t hatched yet.  So it will take some time before the entire colony is eradicated.  Solutions such as citrus liquid, soap and water and herbal leaves might work in the short-term as a deterrent.

If you’re going to use insecticide spray, make sure that the spray contains Cyfluthrin as the effective ingredient.  If you’re also using roach bait at the same time, avoid spraying near the bait.  The spray may contaminate the bait and cause roaches to stay away from it.  Keep in mind that insecticide won’t kill the roaches at the source, like bait does.

If these remedies don’t work you may have to get hold of professional grade pesticides.  These are usually not available in a common hardware store and you’ll probably have to hire a professional exterminator to   handle the pesticides and place them in the right places.  These professional grade pesticides are extremely strong and harmful to all types of bugs.   You should also exercise caution when using them if you have young children or pets in the house.
