What Germs & Viruses Live Among Us!

Did you know that there are 1,400 species of human pathogens which account for only 1% of the total number of microbial species on the planet? Some pathogens have greatly evolved to be able to adapt to different environments which makes them more dangerous than before. Learn more on a few of these harmful pathogens and their lifespan on surfaces.

1. Salmonella

Bacteria don’t have a fixed lifespan because they don’t grow old. When bacteria reproduce, they split into two equal halves, and neither can be regarded as the parent or the child.

Salmonella bacteria is a type of bacteria that’s infamously spread by eating food infected with the bacteria. Salmonella infections also known as salmonellosis are highly contagious which can be transmitted from a person, animal or object carrying the bacteria.

Most Salmonella bacteria live on dry surfaces for up to four hours before they are no longer infectious, However, Salmonella’s survival rate also depends on its species. A 2003 study found that Salmonella enteritidis can survive for four days in high enough amounts to still lead to illness.

2. Clostridium difficile

Clostridium difficile (C. diff), an infectious bacterium that causes a condition known as clostridium difficile colitis. The main symptom of a C. diff infection is diarrhoea. The C. diff bacteria comes from faeces.

You can develop an infection by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your face or specifically your mouth. The spores of C. diff are very resistant to many cleaning detergents and chemicals which allows them to stick around for as long as five months on hard surfaces.

3. COVID-19

The Coronavirus needs no introduction because we all know what it is by now. The coronavirus is known for its ability to stick on various surfaces for a long period of time which is a major factor in the fast-spreading of the virus.

Coronaviruses can be transmitted from person to person through respiratory droplets, hence why social distancing and wearing a mask should be necessary.

These pathogens are highly dangerous which is due to their ability to survive on surfaces. It is important for you to avoid touching your face and wash your hands before eating to prevent the risk of spreading these pathogens.
