Get on board with our checklist of 9 interior design no nos and avoid making permanent mistakes that you would have to live with (quite literally!):

1. Avoid Tiny Pictures on Large Walls

2. Don’t Paint First

Without a question, pick everything else in your room before you pick your paint. You can find paint in any color imaginable, however, it’s much harder to find fabric or upholstery to match a particular paint colour.

3. Don’t Create Barriers

Don’t create barriers that weren’t there in the first place! This means, don’t put a coffee table in an area where people walk through frequently – all that does is make your room more dangerous.

4. Don’t Force Colours To Match In Your Room

Just because you have a red patterned sofa doesn’t mean that it will match with any red striped curtains. Widen your horizon by choosing a colour family instead. Then move on to identify your major pieces of furniture, room decor and then go back to consider your paint colour when coordinating all the elements together.

5. Don’t Build A Furniture Wall

For larger spaces especially, don’t position your furniture to go around the walls in the room. You can split the room and arrange furniture accordingly within the areas to create a separate spaces. It also evoke and intimate feeling in comparison to an otherwise vast space.

6. Don’t Forget Your Theme

Have a consistent theme to run throughout your house. Remember, you’re not only trying to match all the things in one room, but you also want your room to match the house. When deciding on how to design or decorate a room, think about how the style can flow with both your house’s interior and exterior.

7. Don’t Settle

If it doesn’t look good, it probably means that it doesn’t belong in the room. Don’t keep a piece of furniture just because you think you should, or that it was really expensive. All it takes is one misplaced piece to throw off your room’s vibe.

8. Don’t Forget The Little Things

If you want to think like an interior designer, you have to think with a lot of detail – when you walk through your plan, don’t describe the main features only like what colour to paint your wall and which sofa set you should get. Plan for the little things that can also help to tie your entire interior design scheme together, like what decor should you have on your tables and what type of lighting would suit your room.

9. Don’t Get Hung Up On Trends

It’s okay if you’re not feeling the whole animal-print frenzy like the rest of the shabby-chic community, and vice-versa if you like bold colours, find a way to incorporate that in your house! Design your room the way you want it, not by fickle fashion fads.
