With the 2016 Olympics on TV, we’re sure you guys will be glued to your screens to watch the madness that goes down during this legendary sports meet. Swimming is one of the most-watched events and everyone’s eyes will be on Malaysian swimmers Heidi Gan and Welson Sim. Heidi qualified for the 2012 Olympics and became the first Malaysian to represent the country in the open water marathon at the Olympics. Read her interview with us here.

A study by Griffith University in Australia shows that preschoolers who participate in swimming lessons early on actually perform very well intellectually later in life. This study has been billed to be the most comprehensive study in this particular field. The researchers surveyed almost 7000 children from a few countries like Australia, New Zealand and the United States and have come to the conclusion that “swimming children score significantly better than the normal population on a number of measures that are really important for their transition in school,” mainly those of cognitive, language and mental development. Robyn Jorgensen, the lead researcher announced their findings in this YouTube video.

These are some of the benefits your children will enjoy if they are sent for swimming lessons earlier on in life!

1. Better Health

Introducing them to swimming at an early age can help combat childhood obesity and train their body to adapt to constant movement and exercise. This will also ensure that they get used to the exercise and learn to love it, rather than some of us grownups, who groan whenever we have to go to the gym.

2. Improvement Of Strength And Coordination

Swimming takes a lot of practice and it also teaches the child coordination because he or she would have to learn how to control his or her breathing and learn the strokes while doing it all at the same time. This will prove to be highly beneficial in the future.

3. Building A Good Network Of Friends

Enlisting your children for swimming lessons will also engage them into having to carry themselves around strangers and subsequently friends that they will make at swimming class. This will teach your children how to be sociable, which is a very important skill to have as they age.

4. Safety

This is the most important benefit that your child could gain from swimming. Drowning is one of the leading causes of child deaths around the world, so sending your child for swimming lessons will teach your child not to only learn how to swim, but to also learn how to handle himself or herself if he or she is ever faced with a horrible situation.
