9 Laundry Hacks To Make Your Life Easier

The middle of the week rolls around and suddenly you don’t have anything clean to wear. As annoying a chore as laundry is, you can’t really avoid it unless you want to buy a brand new wardrobe every week!

Make your life easier with these 9 quick and easy laundry hacks:

1. Clean Grease Stains

Remove unsightly stains before you throw everything in the wash. For those grimy oil and grease stains with simple white chalk. Cornstarch and talcum powder will work too! Apply a little of either onto the stain and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Then dab out the stain with cool water. This method will remove the worst of most oil and grease stains.

Use a vinegar and dishwashing detergent mixture to get rid of those stubborn, nasty curry stains. Your curry-busting formula is one teaspoon of white vinegar and one tablespoon of detergent to two cups of warm water; dab a little onto a clean white cloth and use it to sponge off the stain. Repeat the process until most – or all! – the curry stain is gone.

3. Whiten Whites

Are your white clothes looking a little yellowed and dull? Bleach is the go-to to cleaner for white clothes, but is not suitable for some fabrics, toxic to use, and can wear down clothes if used too much. For an alternative, use lemon juice. Pour a half cup of lemon juice with your regular amount of clothes detergent on a normal wash cycle. However, lemon’s acidic nature can damage coloured clothes, and so should be only used on white items.

4. Preserve Colours

Vibrant colours tend to fade after a while, or bleed out and stain other lighter coloured clothes. Keep your colours bright and prevent bleeding by adding a half cup of salt into your regular wash cycle. Otherwise, a pre-soak the item of clothing separately with a cup of salt in a half-tub of cold water works for keeping the colours from running.

5. Get Rid Of Odours

Eliminate bad smells and odours from our clothes with baking soda. Just add one cup of baking soda to your regular wash to get rid of bad smells – especially nasty sweat odour from your gym clothes and food and oil scents from cooking. You can also give your clothes a soak in a tub of water and one cup of baking soda for a quick solution.

6. Protect Your Clothes

Repeated use and wash can damage and wear down clothes. However, proper care can prevent premature damage and preserve your clothes. Before turning on your washing machine, give your laundry pile a once over and close snaps and hooks, fasten up Velcro, and zip up zippers to prolong their life. Avoid washing your clothes with buckles, pins, or heavy and sharp items that might be hiding in pockets.

7. Save Buttons!

While you should fasten up fasteners to save them from unnecessary damage and wear, you should leave buttons unbuttoned. Washing buttoned-up clothes will put stress on the buttonholes and buttons, causing tear and popped-off buttons.

8. Wash Inside-Out

Abrasions from a regular wash cycle can damage clothes and cause colours to fade. Turn clothes with bright colours or fade-prone items like denim and jeans inside-out before putting them in the wash. Also wash delicates inside-out to avoid wear and pilling.

Even the best laundering tips won’t help if your washing machine is dirty. Clean it once a month to eliminate odours, remove stain-causing dirt, and kill disease-causing bacteria. Most modern machines will have a self-wash setting that you can put on. Otherwise, run a regular wash to do so. Add in a mixture of one cup of baking soda and white vinegar each and a little laundry detergent for the best results.
