Here’s What You Need To Do After a Flood

Penang was recently affected by devastating flash floods. People are saying that it’s the worst they’ve experienced in the past 15 years. Seven people have lost their lives while more than 5,000 had to leave their homes for higher ground. Needless to say, many houses were damaged by the waters.

Unfortunately, the Malaysian Meteorological Department continues to issue warnings about bad weather conditions on the east coast and Sarawak. We’ll be experiencing a lot of heavy rain and thunderstorms these days, so it’s wise to be ready just in case flash floods occur.

And if it does, this is what you should do after the water recedes:

Record the damages

Use your phone to take photos of everything that has been damaged during the flood. You can even take a video if necessary. It’s important that you do this immediately when you go home, before you start doing any cleaning. This is so that you can provide proof when filing claims with your insurer.

There’s a possibility that you’ll be sifting and wading through contaminated water, which can actually do a lot of harm to your health. Wear gloves and boots so you don’t need to be in direct contact with the flood water. Most importantly, keep young children away from the flood waters as they have a higher risk of falling sick from being in contact with contaminated water.

The first step is to remove the water from your home. Use an outdoor broom to ‘push’ the water out of your home. If necessary, use a pail to dispose the water. After the water recedes, use a vacuum to remove the rest of it from the hidden corners. You might also want to use a mop to remove any remaining moisture from all damp surfaces.

Dry the place

No matter how hard your efforts were at removing water from your home, the place will still be damp. If you still have any portable fans with you, place them around the space and put them on full blast. Otherwise, you may switch on the air conditioner to help dry up the place. Do ensure that the power source has been checked and cleaned before switching on any electrical appliances.

Do deep cleaning

When the place is dry and mould-free, it’s time to do some heavy duty cleaning. Remove things that are damaged or contaminated by flood waters. Wash everything. Scrub every surface with strong detergent. It’s also recommended that you wash all your clothing twice just to be safe.

However, sometimes it’s easier said than done especially if your house has been seriously damaged by the flood waters. That’s the time when you need to call in the professionals to help.
