There’s no better time to release horror movies than during the Asian Hungry Ghost Month, especially since it’s so close to Halloween. And there’s no better time to watch it as well… if you’re brave enough that is.
If you’d like a good scare, here are some new and upcoming horror flicks that you should check out:
1. Annabelle: Creation
You cannot start a list of new horror movies to watch without including Annabelle: Creation. It’s said to be the scariest movie of the year, and apparently even caused some Korean audience to pee in their pants. The movie acts as a prequel to the first Annabelle movie, explaining how a demon came to inhabit the body of the now terrifying porcelain doll.
It’s probably the TV series that made so many of us scared of clowns, and we’re pretty sure that the film version will make us even more afraid of these characters originally associated with fun and carnivals. It will be in cinemas on 7 September.
If you’re a fan of psychological horror movies, this is the one for you. Besides that, it also has a star-studded cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer. While not much is revealed about the plot besides the hint that Ed and Michelle could be terrorising Jennifer and Javier’s life, you can be sure that it’ll have great acting. This is scheduled for a Malaysian release on 28 September.
4. Jeepers Creepers 3
Can’t believe it’s been 16 years since we first saw the Creeper! There was a second installment in 2003, and finally after more than 10 years, they are bringing it back. All we know is that some of the original cast members will be starring in this film, that includes the Creeper itself. It’s set for a global release on 26 September.
Anyone remembers the original one with Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, and Kevin Bacon? This sequel will also have an all-star cast, with the likes of Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, and even Kiefer Sutherland. It talks about how a group of medical students tried to discover the afterlife, and eventually regretted it. The movie will be released on 19 October.
6. Selfie From Hell
Remember the YouTube video that went viral a few years ago? It was so successful that the guy who shot it actually created a full-length movie for the big screen! The movie tries to uncover why the girl in the original YouTube video keeps seeing a dark figure in her selfies. This will be in cinemas on 14 September.
7. Ghost House
Unlike some horror movies that covers up most plot holes hastily, and some even left unexplained, Ghost House is said to be none of that. What was supposed to be a romantic honeymoon in Thailand became a gory one when the lady disturbed an ancient shrine. Viewers said that the quality of the plot is really well done that they left the cinema feeling really satisfied, and spooked of course.
8. Kodomo Tsukai: Innocent Curse
When it comes to horror movies from Japan, you know you’ll get your money’s worth of scary and gory scenes. The film starts off with a series of children’s disappearances. After that, the missing children’s parents are found dead. While most of the town’s people think it has to do with the supernatural, skeptical journalist Ezaki is determined to prove them wrong… but will she? This Japanese horror film will be released in Malaysia on 14 September.
9. Behind the Walls
Unlike other haunted house movies, this one actually tells the story from the perspective of the house itself. That gives an interesting twist to the movie, as almost every scene is taken from within the house. This will be in cinemas on 14 September.
10. Binding Souls
This Hong Kong horror flick is something many of us can relate to – a school that is still haunted by its history during the Japanese Occupation. A group of students is doing research on urban legends passed among students about the school’s bloody history as a Japanese laboratory used during war times. The more they dig, the closer they find themselves to danger. You can catch this in cinemas on 14 September.
On another note, if your air cond starts to hum in the middle of the night, or if the pipe starts to leak when nobody turned the tap on… don’t panic. We don’t have ghostbusters, but we have skilled electricians and plumbers on Kaodim.com who can tackle the issue.
