8 Workout Tips That Will Get You Fit Like Conor McGregor

As the world holds its breath in anticipation of the upcoming boxing showdown between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, the media is lapping up the verbal showdown between the UFC Fighter and the American boxer with an unblemished record of 49-0. Both men are making headlines for their ongoing insults, with McGregor throwing verbal punches at his 40-year-old opponent about being too poor to afford a real suit, while Mayweather slams him back with homophobic slurs.

The spotlight is on 29-year-old Conor McGregor now. The former plumber from Dublin has never actually participated in a professional boxing fight… and soon he will be going fist-to-fist with the reigning boxing star on August 26. Should McGregor be worried? Well, he might be notorious for his trash talking, but when it comes to health and fitness, this highest-earning MMA fighter knows what he’s doing. His precision and power in the fighting arena are proof of that because his hits don’t lie.

His famous words are: “Machines don’t use machines. And I am a machine.”

1. Eat healthy

A true champion eats like one.

McGregor told Men’s Journal, “I just try to eat clean. I’ll eat good quality meats, good-quality greens, good-quality carbohydrates like sweet potatoes and butternut squash, and that’s it.”

You are what you eat, and you’d be wasting your training efforts if your daily diet consists of trips to McDonald’s and the mamak. 

If you want to build muscle, professional trainers advise consuming 30% calories from fats, 30% from protein and 40% from carbs.

2. Perform push-ups

Push-ups are a solid way to strengthen your chest and arm muscles. According to Men’s Health, you should support your weight on your toes and hands beneath your shoulders while keeping your body straight. The balls of your feet should be touching the ground. Be sure to keep your core locked so that a straight line forms between your head, glutes and heels. Start lowering your body until your chest is just an inch away from the ground, then push yourself up by extending your arms.

3. Do the Frozen V-Sit

If you’re familiar with sit-ups, this shouldn’t be too difficult. The experts at Men’s Health advised lying on your back with your limbs outstretched and your hands and feet elevated from the floor. Perform this on a mat so you won’t injure your tailbone. Start by simultaneously raising your torso and legs up to touch your feet, and hold that position for 5 to 10 seconds before repeating the cycle again.

4. Do low lunges

The low lunge works your hamstrings. To do this, place your left leg forward while keeping your right leg stretched behind you in a lunge. Lean forward with your elbow pressing your left knee outward. Try to push your hips down toward the floor. If you’re doing it right, you’ll feel a stretch in your hips. Hold this for 1 minute, then switch sides and repeat.

5. Try martial arts

“The human body can move in many ways, and that’s what I’m trying to do,” McGregor told the media. “I’m looking for my body to move in all ways, to attack and defend. That’s translated into my fighting style.”

He beat Brazilian mixed martial artist Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds with a quick hook to the chin, and this made international news because Aldo had never been defeated in 10 years until his fight with McGregor. Before his battle with Aldo for the UFC featherweight crown, McGregor engaged Ido Portal to help him prepare for the fight, and Portal combined Brazilian martial arts with elements of dance, acrobatics and music.

6. Do yoga poses

Surprised that yoga made it to McGregor’s workout routine? Don’t be.

While he is skilled in martial arts, his training is all about having total control of his body, mind and breath.

“If it doesn’t involve balance I don’t think it’s beneficial,” McGregor told Men’s Health. “I do yoga every day. I’m perfecting my handstand, I like the tree pose with a side leg extension and the plank/side plank.”

7. Flexibility is key

  1. Great article.There’s a time and a place for machinery. Just to be clear, we’re talking about the squat rack, not forklift trucks. But, if you want to build serious strength and muscle, then your body is the only tool you need.
