Let’s Celebrate Earth Hour by Implementing Green Cleaning!

By Cindy Junovica

Earth Hour, celebrated on every 19th March, is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet. Organised by WWF (World Wildlife Fund), this activity engages a massive community on a broad range of environmental issues. As human beings who reside in this planet earth, the responsibility for the welfare of our environment is in our hands.

However, consciously or not, home cleaning products available on the market today contain many harmful chemicals that may be detrimental not only to the residents’ health, but also to the surrounding environment and other living organisms. Examples: cleaning product waste dumped into waterways

Often, the cleaning products used may end up being more dangerous than the germs and dirt. Especially if you have a baby, you should consider natural cleaning ingredients as your cleaning solution. Not only environmentally friendly, natural cleaning materials such as lemon, salt, baking soda, and vinegar are also cost-effective and easy to obtain.

1. Glass & Mirror Cleaning

Dust and dirt stuck on the window glass can cause the glass surface to become blurred and dull. Aside from being unsightly, grimy glass blocks sunlight into the house.

Windows and mirrors can be cleaned effectively with 4 tablespoons of lemon juice and a half gallon of water. Mix both ingredients and wipe the glass thoroughly.

2. Stovetops and Kitchen Appliances Cleaning

For those who often cook, spills or dirt on the stovetops can be cleaned by sprinkling salt and cinnamon. Besides cleaning, cinnamon can mask the burned-off smell on the stovetops and other kitchen appliances.

For stovetops with ceramic glass ones, use a toothbrush dipped in baking soda to clean the tight corners and parts that cannot be covered by cloth. Rinse everything thoroughly to avoid leaving any white residue.

3. Floor Cleaning

To clean the floor with natural ingredients, mix up one cup vinegar with one gallon of warm water (make sure the water is warm!). Mop this solution onto a ceramic tile, vinyl, and wood floor. The mixture will make your floor shiny and eliminate any greasy residue.
