10 Do’s & Don’ts Of Cleaning Carpet Stains

With all the festivities and open houses in Malaysia, carpet accidents can happen at anytime without any notice. You’re spring-cleaning, buying gifts and planning open houses – but are you ready and prepped to tackle those curry spills and sticky stains? Are you mentally and emotionally prepared to handle the stress and panic attacks at the first drop of coffee that hits your carpet?

Keep Calm! Get equipped to handle any carpet emergencies and minimise the damage with our list of stains Dos & Don’ts:

#1. Don’t Wait

The cardinal rule of cleaning stains – don’t leave any stain to sit in! The longer you leave it, the harder it will be to get it out.

Scoop up any solids immediately and use a clean cloth to absorb liquids.

 #2. Don’t Wipe or Scrub

It may feel like you’re working hard to remove the stain, but the wiping and scrubbing action can ruin your carpet fibres and even cause the stain to soak right through the carpet pad.

Instead, ‘blot & dry’. Work from the outside-in and rinse with clean water. Repeat the process as many times as needed.

If the stain has been there for a while, pour some cold water over it to loosen the stain before blotting it.

#3. Do Work From The Outside In

Doing this will prevent the stain from spreading and keeping the mess towards the middle.

#4. Do Leave-In The Treatment

Once you are done with blotting and drying the stained area, leave in your cleaning treatment or chemicals on stubborn spots for about 15-30 minutes. They will be more effective after having some time to work their way through the stain.

#5. Don’t Use Ammonia Solution With Coffee or Tea Stains

Using ammonia based cleaning products will only make the coffee and tea stains worse!

Instead, after blotting up the excess spillage, just use plain water or this home made solution to remove the stain:

  • 1 tablespoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent + 1 tablespoon of white vinegar + 2 cups of warm water

#6. Do Make Sure To Rinse

Always, always rinse! Your cleaning solvents and detergent will leave sticky residues that attract dirt which will end up re-staining your carpet. Rinse the area with water to remove any leftover solutions.

#7. Don’t Over-wet Your Carpet

Unless you have a wet-vacuum to extract liquid immediately, do not pour a whole load of water or cleaning solution. The excess liquid will be absorbed into the carpet backing and will continue to rise up to dampen the surface even after you try to repeatedly clean it. A wet backing can also be damaging to your carpet.

#8. Don’t Air Dry

It’s a very little known fact but avoid doing this as much as possible.

Air drying can cause noticeable rings to appear on your carpet. Cover the damp area with a dry cloth and place a heavy object on top of it. Let the cloth absorb any remaining moisture and dry overnight.

You can then remove the cloth and vacuum or hand brush the carpet to plump it back up again.

#9. Do Know Your Cleaning Remedies & Stains

Different type of stains will require different type of chemistry to remove them effectively. What can remove one type of stain can cause another stain to be permanent! Depending on your carpet material, some cleaning agents can cause discolouration.

Be prepared, do your homework – know your remedies for common water-soluble and non water-soluble stains. You have an array of cleaning chemicals and home solutions at your disposal like hydrogen peroxide, bleach, vinegar, dishwasher detergent and ammonia.

#10. Do Get Your Carpet Professionally Clean

There are however, some really tough stains like ink, oil, paint and other dangerous chemicals – in these situations, it’s still best to leave it to the pros to clean it up for you.

Even without any carpet accidents, you need to clean your carpets every one to one-and-a-half years to maintain its looks, quality and hygiene. Steam-cleaning your carpet can work the same, but with affordable packages available it’s worth sending your carpet to be treated thoroughly.
